…reminds me of opening the record shop…  

Opening

its early and the air feels crisp coming up from the train.  

push the cafe door open and check in with LP, exchanging how-you-do’s.  

punch the clock and grab a till.  

head to the escalator and george in electronics gives a sleepy yet friendly wave.  

the escalator stairs climb up and your toes tap the beat.  

head to a register and toss the till in.  

check the closet for new bags and steal a glance into the window display at the commuters shuffling past, the broadway antfarm.  

the LP at the door is fighting off a nap.  his head bobs with every few beats.  

across the street, you can see the sun is poking its head out upon union square park.  the doors arent open yet, but people are milling outside the store, waiting until the clock hits the hour.  

fixing up the checkout line.  oop theres a dvd in the candy dish.  and an abandoned simon & garfunkel best of on the battery rack.  oh and there’s a tote bag on the floor.  and jeezus some asshole opened up half of the kid robot toys.  

arms piled up with misfiles, pace kept with the song, things set one by one in their right places. 

fix one of the hats just a bit, like a picture skewed on a wall.  

dust off your hands as the clock clicks in your last staff-only seconds.  

the song ends.  

the doors open.
